Structured Finance: A Matter of Gatekeeping?

Structured finance, initially applauded for opening up new sources of funding for businesses and investments for consumers, has attracted strong criticism for contributing to the erosion of underwriting standards for the complex financial products which led to the global financial crisis in 2007-08. While gatekeepers bear a large part of the blame, this article argues that regulatory reforms making them accountable are only part of the solution as other considerations count too.
