IMF Managing Director delivers speech on Unconventional Monetary Policies

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde has delivered a speech on Unconventional Monetary Policies (UMP) at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. Lagarde praised the UMP of central banks for buying global policymakers the time and space to carry out the reforms needed to lay the foundation for lasting growth. Policies such as the purchase of assets by central banks to support financial stability and boost activity have benefitted all countries - first lessening risks of financial turmoil and then increasing growth. Lagarde emphasised the need for policymakers to work together to take into account the full impact of UMP - local and global - and how that affects the path of exit. Policymakers were also called upon to take the full range of actions needed to restore growth and stability, warning monetary policy cannot provide all the answers.
